Slitting is the process of cutting material to a specific length or width from a larger piece of material, usually referred to as the “master” or “parent” roll. Slitting machines handle a variety of materials, although one machine will not usually have the capabilities to slit all types of materials. Two main types of slitting machines include roll slitters and slitter rewinders. Each of these can be beneficial depending on your slitting requirements. Using a slitting machine is a great way to reduce material cost and inventory by being able to buy standard size rolls and slitting to meet your unique needs.

Our Slitting Process

The three main parts of slitting machines include the uncoiler, the slitter, and the recoiler. Setup is key to our precision slitting process: ensuring all elements are aligned, having sharp blades with clearance set properly, and setting cutter spacing correctly. The job type and these three main considerations determine the setup of the upper and lower blades.

  • Type of material
  • Thickness of the material
  • Tolerance factor needed while slitting

After double-checking setup parameters, we place the material for slitting on the machine to be uncoiled. This step unwinds the master roll of the entire material to be passed through the multiple slitters on the machine. Once uncoiled, the material runs through the upper and lower circular blades to achieve equal narrower widths. After cutting is complete, the narrower widths of the material are recoiled into smaller, more manageable rolls. At Integrated Packaging Films, our operators have the experience and training necessary to properly maintain our slitting machines and understand how critical setup and proper tool usage is to providing high-quality service.
